Both Buddhism and Vedanta emerging fromthe same soil and talking about the universalphilosophy related to physical andmetaphysical worlds differ apparently so fartheir philosophical outlook, religious angleand social structure is concerned. But inreality both are impressed from each other. Buddhism while developing its baseborrowed a lot from Vedanta’s philosophy tobuild up a separate religious mansion of itsown. Evils produced by the practice ofkarmkandas and ritualism supported byBrahminism provided fertile ground forgrowth of Buddhism in India. Thephilosophical contribution of the Buddha hasuniqueness not in its originality, but in themanner and way that he represented. What hetalked about the universe, world, birth, rebirth, death, mind, consciousnesses etc., arenot new. A lot has been said about that inIndian great ancient philosophical as well asreligious epics. However, Buddhist attackupon Hinduism for blind practice ofkarmkandas and ritualism badly shook theroot of Vedantism. This is another fact thatSankracharya and his followers, provided astable ground to Vedantic philosophy andHinduism to revitalize. Thereafter, Buddhismbegan to lose ground in India due to itsinherent weaknesses, and esoteric practice ofVajrayana and Mantrayana maligning theimage of Buddhism. The present book, namely, Buddhism and Vedanta (Contrast and Similarity), critically examining the aforesaid facts, thoroughly discusses rise and growth of Buddhism and its inclination towards Vedic philosophy.
